Dubai's Lost Markets

Until the advent of supermarkets and shopping malls, most of Dubai's Residents bought their fruit, vegetable and fish at local markets. Fish was locally caught while the fruit and vegetables may have come from a variety of sources, often flown in from exotic locations. Vegetables may have come from local farms or as far away as Lebanon transported by road trucks that carried high value cargoes on their return trip from Dubai. Markets were located throughout Dubai. People had their favourite markets and often shopped at the same stall. Stallholders offered their regular Customers cold drinks and free bananas as a usual part of their service. Dubai's development meant market locations were lost to development plus supermarkets and shopping malls took away their customers.
