"Life in the Emirates"

In 1980s Dubai Radio featured Patrick Brady and The Establishment singing "Life in the Emirates", a song they had written. While the lyrics did not necessarily represent how life was in the Emirates, the words did strike a chord with the European Expatriates and soon became popular. Many Exaptriates from those days can still sing the song today and still enjoy the last line in the chorus - particularly the "boom boom" Umm al Qwain!!

The Establishment

Patrick Brady was 16 when he was given his first guitar. Soon he was lead guitarist/vocalist with Irish Band "Cromwell". They toured Ireland and released an album – "At The Gallop" plus a string of singles, notably "Guinness Rock" and "You Got it Made". After Cromwell broke up, Patrick Brady and Michael Kiely formed The Establishment. They became the Resident Band at Dubai's newly opened Hilton Hotel in 1980s. The Duo wrote and sang songs about expatriate life in the Gulf Region. They developed a large Expatriate following.

Later The Establishment split up. Patrick continued performing as a solo artist in Five Star Hotels around the Gulf Region before moving to Australia in 1990 where he joined The Irish Drovers. He toured Australia for many years while maintaining a residency at Sydney's Hilton Hotel. Patrick later set up his own show –The Patrick Brady Irish Spectacular - performing in top clubs in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. He has released two CD’s – "The Irish Rover" and "Dreaming of Ireland", appeared on Australia's TV Channel 9 and the final of Australian Idol.

It's tough in the gulf when the ACs not working
and the desert is burning in the hot noon day sun
But I've learnt how to cope take the smooth with the rough
Cos like every expat I'm a long way from home
"Ahlan Wa Marhaba" to "Life in the Emirates"
Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman.
They’re the places I love and the places I won’t forget
Sharjah, Fujeirah and Umm al Quwain"
Well I miss my sweet wife and I miss my dear children
Sometimes I feel like it's breaking my heart
And I'll never get used to having Sunday on Friday
But I know I'll feel sorry when it's time to depart
"Ahlan Wa Marhaba" to "Life in the Emirates"
Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman.
They’re the places I love and the places I won’t forget
Sharjah, Fujeirah and Umm al Quwain"
I work hard for my dirhams and I try hard to save them
but at the end of each day I am worked to the bone
but the friends I have made here will be my friends forever
ulkrack? inshallah I am never alone
"Ahlan Wa Marhaba" to "Life in the Emirates"
Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman.
