Departing Dubai Airport 2009

Dubai Airport has changed considerably since I first flew in to Dubai in March 1971. Flying to international destinations from Dubai in 1970s usually involved night departures so few opportunities to photograph Dubai from the air. Back then Dubai Airport had just one Departure Gate!
Taking off from Dubai Airport in 2009 was a vastly different experience. My Emirates 777 departed from Gate Number 297! My flight departed early morning on a clear day so I had a "Bird's Eye View" of Dubai.
In 1971, Dubai Airport was surrounded by sparsely populated desert. In 2009 the desert sand had all but disappeared, replaced by sprawling urban developments.

Deira Coastline was in danger of disappearing through erosion. Reclamation has moved Deira's Coastline out to sea.
